Re: The Workhouse, Loughlinstown

I seem to have a picture etched in my mind of Joe with a book of tickets in his hand; is it possible that he used to sell raffle tickets at the Club's home games, and that that's what's stuck in the back of my mind?

Re: The Workhouse, Loughlinstown

I do, a great Labour Man, often canvassed with him on behalf of the Labour Party. He lived in Glasthule, I knew 2 of his children Dora, who worked in the Shopping centre, and Eddie who was a very good footballer, both very nice people. Joe to me was a great example of a person who always wanted to ...

Re: Somewhere to Chat.

Have no recollection of ever seeing him with a camera, Denis. Most of what he did seems to be in or around the city. The only identifiable clips that I can see are of the Mailboat, Killiney Hill, and the storm behind the Easr Pier. As Sinéad reminded us, he used to conduct our "ling-a-longs" in the ...

Re: Somewhere to Chat.

Denis, like you, I also found him "austere and aloof", not the sort of chap you could have a friendly chat with. I seem to recall that at some stage he was chaplain attached to CBS. He used to come in to classrooms occasionally to give talks to us young sinners. One such lecture that I still remembe...

Re: Somewhere to Chat.

All perfectly clear. I wonder though, why gardening books persist in telling us, that if we have certain diseased plants, we should pull them up immediately and burn them, to avoid spread of said disease? What should be done with them?

The "Johns", Denis. (St. John Ambulance Brigade). The much-revered Brendan Harmon was in charge of the Cadets.

Re: Births, Deaths, Marriages and Anniversaries

Yes, Denis, Liam was in the Brothers with us, and was also a member of the SJAB , along with a few other fellas from the Noggin. The last time I met Liam was when my wife was in Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital, so it's hardly surprising that I didn't recognise him in the photo on RIP.ie. May they both re...

Re: JOKES ONLY

From the Rotherham Daily News "A furious row has broken out between a local tattoo artist and his client after what started out as a routine inking session, left both of them requiring emergency hospital treatment. Vintage film fan and part time plus size model Tracey Munter (23), had visited the In...

I think County Dublin Road Club were based in the Boro, Denis, and Sorrento originated in Dalkey before moving down to your neck of the woods.

Re: Somewhere to Chat.

Yes indeed, Den, one of those unsung heroes you never see on the winners' podiums, but whose dedication keeps all sport moving along. I see quite a lot of cyclists pass by my house on their weekend training runs, but I don't know if there are any clubs still surviving in the Boro'.

Yes, and apart from his football ability he was a genuinely nice guy. Thanks for the update Keeper/Denis.
