English is SO difficult to learn....
I worked with a lovely guy in my last job...he was from Slovakia.
His English was very very good, I think he learned it at school in Slovakia.
He didn't use "a" or "the" at all eg ' door is locked......screwdriver is in box etc.
He asked me to explain ''a' and 'the'......I was hard pressed I have to say
One day he highlighted to me how daft the English language can be.....
The fire alarm in the building was acting up and was the topic of conversation of the day.
What was confusing for Marek was ...
When the alarm was set we said the alarm was ON, but for him it wasn't ON because it was QUIET, so it was OFF.
When we said the alarm was GOING OFF, he would say no, the alarm is ON, not going off.
Em, why do we say the alarm is going off when it is clanging?....it is ON!!
Why do we say the alarm is on when it is quiet?.....it is OFF!!
He is quite correct to point this out....weird English language.
