Looking for Brian Holden

Post by Kelly » Thu Oct 16, 2014 3:39 pm

Hello! I am posting an inquiry on behalf of my Father, Daniel Reeves. My Dad was born in 1932 (he is 82); he lived in Ireland on Burdett Avenue, Sandycove from 1948-1950.

He would love to reconnect with his best friend from the past, when he was a young man living in Ireland.

His friend is Brian Holden. Brian is an Englishman who was a tradesman in construction, modernizing storefronts. His Father was in the awning business. During their friendship, Brian lived with his parents, who resided at 29 Newbridge Avenue Sandymount, Co. Dublin.

My Father and Brian kept in touch for a while, following my Father's move to the United States - but over the years they lost contact.

If anyone knows Brian or can connect us to someone who might be in touch with him, my Dad would be thrilled.

Thank you,

Kelly

Do you know Daniel Reeves?

Post by Kelly » Sun Dec 14, 2014 9:45 pm

Greetings!

A while ago I posted an inquiry on behalf of my Father, Daniel Reeves. I am attempting to assist my Dad, regarding his wish to find his best childhood friend, Brian Holden.

My Dad was born in 1932 (he is 82); he lived in Ireland on Burdett Avenue, Sandycove from 1948-1950.

Today my parents reside in the USA (Teaneck, New Jersey.)

So far I haven't heard from anyone who knows Brian - but, just wondered if there is anyone from the area who remembers my Father?

Thank you and happy holidays!

Kelly

Kelly Sorry I can't help you. It is a bit before my time. However there are a few Holdens around the area and it is not a very common name really. If you Google Cuala Security Dun Laoghaire (I think there is a Holden involved there) or Cuala GAA Club in Dalkey. maybe it can set you on the right track. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Don't think that they'd be the same Holdens, NM. Tom Holden came to Dun Laoghaire from Kilkenny as a young man, and none of his lads was named Brian.

Good day,
Thank you so much for your responses and for the newspaper clipping!
Unfortunately it seems that this information relates to a different Holden family, without a son named Brian.
Note, my Dad indicated that Brian, who lived with his parents, was originally from the UK - he was an Englishman living in Ireland.
I appreciate your kind notes and assistance in my quest to reach Brian! I remain hopeful that we will find him! ;)
Have a great day - warm regards,
Kelly

Good luck with your search, Kelly. Incidentally, you can tell your Dad that I was born on Burdett Avenue. My parents had a flat there, in a house owned by people named Farrell. We left there when I was aged seven, so I don't remember an awful lot about the folks who lived on the Avenue. The best memories I have, is of it's proximity to Sandycove Harbour, and the many happy hours spent there in Summertime.

Thank you for your kind note, Skins!

I read your post to my Dad and he was delighted - this was his response to me:

Thank you for your efforts locating Brian.
Was interesting learning of someone born on Burdett Ave. loving the proximity to Sandycove Harbor.. . .I spent a lot of time there swimming.
Loved the place. . .
Da

Thanks again - happy holidays!

Would your dad have any photos from his time in Sandycove/ Dun laoghaire?

If he would not mind sharing them.

Hi NM,

I don't think my Father has photos, but I will ask him.

He has mentioned that there were family photos, but unfortunately he's never been able to obtain them.

If he has any pictures, I'll be sure to post them!

Happy holidays,

Kelly

Hello Skins,

Here is a photo of the home were my Father lived - 8 Burdett Avenue.

The garage on the right eventually was converted into a residence.

Hello NM,

My Dad scanned the attached Sandycove photos, which he took when visiting in the 1980's.

As you suggested, if he can locate photos with him in them (as well as others), I will post them...because 'you never know' who may know my Father or his friend, Brian.

Cheers - and warm regards,

Kelly

Good God, Kelly! We were actually next-door neighbours! I was born at No.7, in 1944, and we left there in 1951. Your Dad would have been a good bit older than me, so it's unlikely that we were playmates during the overlapping years, and I certainly don't remember the name. Funny old world, isn't it?

Hi Skins - WOW!

My Father was really amazed that you had lived right next door. What a small world!

He mentioned another name to me - which might be familiar - he said a girl named Ann lived across the street (I believe her last name was Fitzsimons?).

Have a great day!

Yes, NM and Keeper - I am amazed and thrilled....and this has meant so much to my Father, who speaks so fondly of his years in Dun Laoghaire.

We'll see...perhaps I'll even be able to locate his old buddy, Brian Holden! (New info - Brian's Father was in the awning installation business and Brian began a business of his own, modernizing storefronts).

Happy Holidays!

Warm regards,

Kelly

No, sorry to say, Kelly, I don't recall the name. The only names I can bring to mind are the Glynn family, Farrells, Keenan the dentist at the top of the Avenue, and Byrne's shop just round the corner.

Your father probably remembers the seafront from the baths to Sandycove being "filled in". I think I can vaguely remember it.

I used play cowboys and indians on the littler green at Sandycove (+ Salthill and Longford Terrace). Hard to imagine where we hid.
