Peggys Cake Shop

Post by Rocker » Wed Mar 07, 2012 11:51 am

It is ages since I have been in Peggy's Cake Shop in Glasthule. The blooming parking warden annoys me and I don't want ot pay just for a couple of minutes. Today as the sun was shining I walked. The shop is as good as ever. Great home made breads, cakes to die for and contact with the man who is doing the baking, he can tell you exactly what the ingredients are.Where would you get it? But we are neglecting it. The pay parking is putting people off stopping in their cars and strollers or walkers don't go that far up the town. Lets put Peggys on our itinerary we cant let local business' die. We have the buying power.

i agree Rocker, anyone who hasn't been to peggy's and tasted their cakes and bread don't know what they are missing.its one of the last of the old shops that hasn't died away.ie,smyths fruit and veg.maggies fish shop, forte's chipper, etc etc...as for the parking,30 cent in a machine at either of the carparks opposite the church would cover the time to walk up the short distance to the shop, and well worth the effort. :)

He has been there for as long as I can remember. He used to work in Rositas cake shop about 50 yrs ago on Georges St down near the corner of Marine Road. A great fellow but its got so quiet now in Glasthule I'd say most people only go up as far as the supermarket where the Astoria used to be. Anyway I had a big bag of cakes for tea!!

Everyone on the site should be going to Peggy's to buy bread and cakes. If we want to keep local shops and their owners going we must support them. Billy, like his father, is a great baker. Now I must confess I am a bit biased as he is one of my cousins. Billy's father was born in Glasthule and reared in Devitt Villas. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHOPS!!!!

Jaze, Grammer, with a diet like that you could save yourself a lot of time and just walk straight to the I.C.U. in Michael's!

Life is all about quality not quantity !! go for it grammer !! 8-) mayhaps forget the bus and walk ? thats the only concession I would entertain but then again whilst walking you could get run over by a bus!!

Grammer, bring me back a coffee slice, I'll pay you when you get here. Just go for it, the shop may not be there if we
waste too much time thinking about it. Spud's idea of walking there is a good one, you can get the bus back up.

Sinead,

Well said. that is really why I started the thread. This shop used to be buzzing with large queues and the other day I was the only customer.I have neglected all the local shops but am coming back and am delighted that the like of Peggy's is still there waiting when I finally woke up to see what we have on our doorsteps. The big supermarkets are just stocking what sells quickly and if we dont support the local shops very soon there will only be this cheap thing or that cheaper inferior rubbish thing to be had (whatever the supermarket buying guru dictates).
Now completly off topic Strum sorry
I used to buy the most divine john West tuna slices in sunflower oil. For the last while I cant get them anywhere so I rang John West in Liverpool, their customer care girl assured me they were still available but she said there was no demand from the supermarkets in Ireland so they were no longer coming here!! Incredible.

Sinead

This is so sad. When I was last talking to him he thought he would try to hang on for a year or so but business was so bad he was demoralised. If you see him please give both our very best wishes for a happy retirement.

You can all go to Peggy's Bakery in Glasthule for the best cakes in the Borough, it was only closed for the wedding of Billy's
daughter!

Yes, Billy and Gerry retired a couple of years ago. Retirement seems to be suiting them. Met Billy last month and we had a good chat. There is no one can match his baking, he is fantastic.
