My mother is from Ballsbridge and worked (as did most of her 5 sisters) in the Swastika Laundry on Shelbourne Road initially but then she was moved to Dun Laoghaire. It was strange to keep that name on it alright.

Hi Holly

I remember tourists taking photos of the delivery vans.No big deal to us,we were so used to seeing them.I wonder would they be allowed to use the Swastika sign today?

the Swastika is about 3000 yrs old -- the one you are thinking of is the Nazi one which Hitler used and is different mostly because he straightened it up

the laundry had "estb 1912" on the swastika logo
to indicate that they were using it years before that political party usurped it

Gang.......re Swastika,

Nazi Party logo was tilted at 45 degrees whereas the ancient Hindu sign was as the Swastika Laundry i.e ,flat . In addition the Roman Army used it in some of their Legionaire Divisions in Europe and Britain and I am also told it was found at Mayan & Aztec sites in Mexico & Central America in pre Columbus times, before the Spaniards arrived...and THEY made all the poor savages attend the their version of Christian Brothers and the Domo Convent...or be cooked alive.
I think we had that choice too, Eblana Av vs. Kingstown Grammer....I always liked their Blazers but did not fancy being cooked (No, I said Cooked!!!) by Lofty Flynn or Mary Davis !!!!!

Enviro ! good info there, think Lofty had a Swastika tatoo somewhere on his person, he certainly was trained by the Gestapo   speaking of "tilting " things, didn't someone get paid an obscene amount of money for "tilting" the 'oul Shamrog on our National Airline's fleet, and that after years of research for a new logo

Keeper,
A correction there, I think HE TRAINED THE GESTAPO.....and I was not aware of Aer Lingus having a p.r livery change. CIE forked out a fortune to the Swedish firm who designed the "Broken Wheel" roundal in 1964 in place of the beloved green "FLYING SNAIL"...and by 1987 we had Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann plus the Railways and even more costs, At least the founders of the Laundry, the Brittain family used the SWASTIKA from 1912 until about 1974...

Yes Enviro, on mature reflection, you are correct, he probably did   Aer Lingus logo changed a good few years now, it was a very small tilt, no one noticed it much, a rip off !! My fondest memory of the Laundry was their little delivery vans, suitably marked with the Swastika, they seemed to be around for ever, I wonder has anyone got a colour photo of one on the site ? also, were they battery driven ?

Spud,
I seen it but look at the vans and all the advertising ....I think it was a BROWNSHIRT doing a nixer and mixed up with the angle " Drinken ein Grossen Bier" ...You know a lot of them escaped to the FREE STATE after the war with help from those Fascists in the Vatican and "Fair maidens dancing at ther crossroads DEVALERA " was a big enthusiast...The names come to mind, Albert Luykx, and the guy that sprung Mussolini, Otto Skorenzy all led charmed lives there...

Hi Enviro
Yes you are right, there is a Loco above but because of the laundry topic I only put up Kelso Electric Van.
I take it you have seen the photo in a book.
