This is a goody

Post by grammer » Sat Jan 08, 2011 1:17 am

A controversial plan to issue "certificates of Irishness" is to go ahead.

The Republic's Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the scheme for a certificate of Irish heritage would be unveiled within "the next few weeks".

It is aimed at up to 80 million people wordwide who are of Irish ancestry but do not qualify for an Irish passport.

When first announced, the idea drew some scepticism from genealogists, who claimed it would devalue the process of tracing the family tree.

One genealogist said the document would be meaningless without proof of a person's origins.

Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin has said the certificate, first suggested at the Global Irish Economic Forum in 2009, will go ahead.

"It will enable people who have a strong Irish connection to assert their Irishness and their heritage," he said.

The certificate would have no legal standing but would recognise the descendants of generations of Irish in an official way.

Mr Martin said there would be no cost to the taxpayer

Great idea Grammer a few questions/points for you to work out. Now starts the split..... It is Dun Laoghaire, Dun Laoire, Dun Leary or Kingstown (as stated on the Town Hall Bannisters etc.). Do we recognise those from Monkstown, The Farm, Glasthule, Sallynoggin et al. How do you establish your right to this certificate.

Good luck with finding the solution.

If the Brits started such a scheme you would get a better response from your neighbours Grammer  But you have to hand it to our Government, they are making every effort to supply us with material to help us laugh ourselves out of the recession

Lol - that's a funny one alright! The cert to authenticate "Borough of Dun Laoghaire-ness" sounds good though ;) I've lived in Balbriggan for 5 years, but even if I have a long life and end up living here 50 years, I'll still be a Dun Laoghaire girl at heart. Well there won't be any need to have fully qualified ones, sure a mere look would be enough.
