Bug Rock and the Baths
Bug Rock and the Baths
My Dad is local to Dun Laoghaire, and he sent me a couple of pics today. One is Bug Rock, where he used to fish as a lad, and the other of course is the local baths. It's terrible to see the baths in such a state - I remember going there as a kid myself. Thing is, what do you do? No-one wants an outdoor seawater pool these days.

Re: Bug Rock and the Baths
Welcome to the Site Calypso.
Yeah for sure, an on-going shame the Baths is, a Bane on the Town for sooo long now.
Try the Search feature here with "baths" and you should find loads of Topics about it.
See the wall in the bottom corner of the first photo. We used to DIVE off there down between two rock formations, and if you didn't get it right you were fooked.
Luckily none of ever got hurt but I remember seeing a bloke from the Noggin once got thrown up on the rocks with a Wave after a Dive and got "Barnacled" OUCHIE!

Well Grammer, this is an interesting turn-up indeed, if those plans came to pass wouldn't it be wonderful, they sure needed a facelift. Begining to wonder, what with new Library and cleaning up Moran Park and this, are the people of the 'Boro being rewarded already for the highest compliance for paying the household charge so far
well Phil the Enforcer said the best Councils would get the most

Thanks for the link Holly, too good to be true that the Council did it, it's a wonder they even let the Dulux people in at all !!
Nice job, but I'm afraid it will be a blank canvas for the grafitti creeps, anyway, thanks Dulux

Did you see this on RTE 6one news whats the point in painting the place if its not going to open to the public I know it looks cleaner and thanks Dulux but I think the paint could have been put to better use like local old folks clubs football clubs ect its the job of the coco to keep the baths a bit presentable

Hi folks
I see on the news today that the Town Hall has shelved plans for baths and are building small beach and pier instead.
Interesting times ahead

I suppose it's a little thing called money that's stopping the development. I must say it looks terrific and very sensible. Pity it's not going ahead. Isn't it funny how you see so much protest about things being built and little or no protest about the things that should be built :!:

29eire23,
Good to see you on site, all too rare and anything must be better than whats in situ just now......

Re: Dun Laoghaire Baths/ new beach??
in the book IMAGES OF IRELAND , DUN LAOGHAIRE RATHDOWN,by Pat Walsh, there is a photo of what is called Dun Laoghaire beach, Kingstown.this is situated directly behind the east pier and is described as very pebbly.there is no natural sandflow to this area, even the sand in sandycove harbour was brought in and is replenished on many occasions from elsewhere. My point is,if the baths are demolished and a beach and pier are put in place, will it actually work,ie,draw crowds, from local or afar and benefit the local economy.????29eire23 wrote:Hi folks

Re: Dun Laoghaire Baths/ new beach??
Bidgie,
I don't think so. When we were children we swam in the sea at Blackrock, Salthill, Killiney but, when we really wanted something special we went to Blackrock or DunLaoghaire Baths. It was the whole excitement of the various depth pools, the tiered seating, the dressing rooms the preceived elegance of the day. I know they deteriorated in the last thirty years but, in their hay day they were special. We went to polo matches, watched diving displays, sequence swimming etc.
What DunLaoghaire needs at the seafront is a decent elegant baths with decent facilities. It doesn't need apartments. We need an Olympic size pool, good management, good facilities, spectator areas and health spas, good access, decent multi storied parking.
I have been in big towns and small villages in Austria and there the facilities go from the sublime to the uber sublime even in the tiniest village. They appreciate health and activity and being inland know they need decent pools. Let DLRCoCo link up with the Austrian Consulate and get the price for the real thing. This is something we need for the people not the speculators.

Sinead, were the seaweed baths the ones that were situated inside the front doors to the right.they were similar to a bathtub you would have at home.Sinead wrote:When I was young Seaweed Baths were available in the Dun Laoghaire Baths!

Re: Bug Rock and the Baths
Budgie you are right but they were about twice the size of anything in a 3 bed semi. I think massages were also available.
As kids we would try to peep in to see who was using this facility.

Budgie and Sinead (with a fada
)
yes both of you are right -
My Grandmother worked in the baths in her younger days -
when the Ladies and Gentlemen of the area would come to the Baths for their saunas and health treatments.
It was the thing to do you know.

Just on the baths
A couple of tins of Dulux while plaudits must be handed out where due-does'nt get away from the fact
That the condition and state of the baths is a blxxxdy disgrace-and how DLRCC can boast about the free paint is
really egg on their faces.
-Think I'll have a bit of toast and fried egg for me supper
