As far as I can remember Murdoch's had 3 shops.
One at the Peoples park another at the top of Marine Road and the other was near Smyth's Pub.
I am just thinking now was there a garage near Smyth's Pub? Could it have been Archer's?

Murdochs were in that spot for quite a few years. Betty Bethum the Girl Guide Leader
was the manageress upstairs. I think the branch down at the Library opened when
this center town one closed down. That area down by the Library was populated with
tenements before Murdochs was built.

Holla:
Was Johnny Taaffe a driver for McGoverns? I think Peter McGovern had a
sweet shop.
They were absolute gentlemen. I knew some of their children. One of
the sons Gabriel had a vegetable shop in Ballybrack for a few years.

Paul McGovern had a shop in Ashgrove. He retired to outside Wexford sadly he died either late last year or earlier this year. He was great sport and a gent and delivered to us when we lived in Birch Grove.

Re: Photos lost from the Forum
The only 2 people I remember from Murdochs were Tony Crimmons and Andrew Smith (who incidentally was an alter boy with me). We also got our paraffin from Murdochs and a shop on York Road (cannot remember the name). Remember the man in McGoverns shop down at the park organising ticket for my father to Lourdes.

Re: Photos lost from the Forum
I remember going into Murdochs to buy my first Phase tester and looking for one that I could get replacement lamps for
Our first TV was from Totterdells. It was a PYE and I was sure Charles Mitchell could see me when looking "out of the TV". To get "colour" we got a blue perspex that hung over the front.
Our first true colour TV was from RTV Rentals.

Re: Photos lost from the Forum
Great photos Thomastown. Bring back memories particularly of Murdocks.Murdocks was a great hardware shop and the shop assistants were experts in giving good advice on how to tackle any household job. I'm afraid that type of skill is lacking in the hardware stores of today. Tony Crimmins was mentioned, he was a really good man and did great work for a lot of people around Dun Laoghaire as well as anyone who sought his advice in the shop. I think he was in charge of the shop facing the old Library and he tended to wear a suit. I also remember Frank Gallagher who worked in the Park House shop, he was in the brown coat category. Frank was better known to me as Goolie and he was a great goalkeeper who played with St. Joseph's Boys and T.E.K. Frank died very young and his good nature is missed by many. Murdocks garage on Cross Avenue has also great memories for me. The 2 garage doors were a natural for playing football into, particularly the horseshoe shaped one. There was nothing like hearing the sound of the rattle of the door when the ball hit it. Happy days. Thanks for reminding me Thomastown.
