Hi Gang,

With regard to the "Fog Horn" and its familiarity, us 'rural folk' were not without our own form of noise also. Unlike the Fog Horn which was only unusally sounded in adverse weather our 'warning' was a regular occurrence daily I think twice, 1 pm and 6pm. I am not sure about the 9am one though it may have called us......rurals. This was to remind us of our daily rituals...no not Mecca or Vatican facing but more important even than that..................................................Breakfast, dinner and tea!!!!!!!

It came in the mode of a loud hooter whistle and it was said that on the OCCASIONAL TIMES it was heard in Old Dun Leary, York Rd, Seafront and environs. that the local townies Panicked and rushed for the air raid shelters at Bolands Bakery nearby and the signal box at the former railway crossing at Salthill. Some even went to the Allbright factory. The town was in panic as the Zepplins were on the way. Ning Nong Reid was the A.R.P warden and he kept a log of all the names of the 'panickers' so as to confront them afterwards.

Us rurals never seen the Emergency, as it was called but we remember the comfort of knowing that the Krauts would never pass Glandore in case "THE FIR BOLG" were awaiting.
Tony Gibney Sr.was manning the Ack Ack guns at Sandycove as well in case of a pincer move via Sallynoggin, then deeply forested and Wolf ridden. (Mickey Wolfe that was !)

Some of the 5th Columnists in Kingstown Grammar tried to persuade old Fritz and Heinreich to attack but even these battle hardened veterans of Verdun and the Somme thought the better of the Farmers, Mounttownites, Highthorners and Ashgroveites.

Ah well, they were such simple times too........

Very nice shots Snowy, didnt realize there was so much slime on the pond in Moran park, you,d think they,d do something about it.

I didn't go down Farmboy. The hubby took them for me while i was doing some retail threapy, :rfl: But ye it looks dreadful, i must have a word with the man that looks after it,and see are there any plans to clean it up.Will most likely see him during the week.It could be a gorgous place if it was kept in good order. ;-)
