Walking up Marine road the other day I noticed the Embaassy of Georgia beside the portview hotel ,this got me thinking the area has been home to a fair few diplomats, clergy,goverment ministersand high profile people over the years,just an Idea see can you add to the list past and present will do

Herr Hempel - the German Ambassador during WW2 lived at Gortleistragh on Sloperton in Monkstown. The house was demolished and replaced by the apartment block Pakenham House.

I did not know the harbour was in poor condition?????? and indeed I did not know the ferry had stopped either.

Snowy's article quotes a date of 1868 for the completion of Coliemore, and the shape of the landscape before that can be clearly seen on two online versions of Ordnance Survey maps before that date
1 go through the map viewer on www.osi.ie. The older map there is about 1860
2 go through askaboutireland.ie to Griffith's valuation and enter a fictitious name e.g. Thomas Smith - then go to the maps - this gives an earlier version of Ordnance Survey, probably the 1837 version.

Coliemore is undeveloped in both, but Bullock is fully developed in both.

I'm still wondering about this George Davis - Where did he come from? - Where did he live? When? - How has his memory faded so much?

Georges Street in the city (proper name - South Great Georges St) is a name that goes back to medieval days, and is linked with an early church in the area called St George's. It is shown (as Georges Lane) on the John Speed map of 1610.

Wonder did the rock fro both come from Dalkey Quarry (from memory the stone is the same although Coliemore is "rougher")

On Farmboys Photo it appears that the wall on the slip has been highered so the bottom part may still be the original?

It's not hard to see the likely source of the rock for these harbours. If you look at the old maps you will see at least 3 quarries within a few hundred yards of Bullock, and many more in the area. Dalkey Quarry was just one of many which were used to provide rock for Dun Laoghaire, and probably also for Bullock and Coliemore. There was a very big quarry where the Peoples Park now is, and much of the area where the town now stands was solid rock also.

This is a great list. About thirty years ago the Australian Ambassadors residence was at the turn of the road that came up the hill from the station in Killiney about opposite Bonos house. Don't know if they still have that.

Just had a look at the OSI map and it is Strathmore Road and the house is listed at the Canadian Residence.
