Old Fire Station - 9 Georges Place
Apologies if this has been covered before, I'm fairly new on here.
I'm wondering if anyone has any photo's of this building when it was in use as a Fire Station? I worked in this building for a couple of years when it was used as a Depot by DLRCC. I was always on the look-out for a photo of it from its days as a working Fire Station but never came across one. I know it's a protected structure but thats about as much as I know. I'd love to know the story of the building as well as see a photo. Can anyone help?

Damien,
There is a photo of the outside of the Fire Station on this site.

but not when it was a working fire station.

Damien my B I L was a fireman there, he's retired now but I'm sure he has photo's of it, I know my nephew gave him a sketch of it, that he drew himself which I'm sure he did from a photo. I'll check it out for you.

Damien - Cheers. I didn't know it was built in 1899. I started working the building in 2001. 102 years later!
Snowhite - That would great. Thanks.
Anybody know when it was decommissioned as a working Fire Station?

I don't know exactly. Mid to late 80's?
Re: Old Fire Station - 9 Georges Place
If you all talk nicely to Denis I am sure he will be able to ask Marie Molloy (nee Whelan)
who lives in Greystones all the questions about the station. Her father was the last
fire chief in that building and the family lived there.

Hi Sinéad - Being a newbie I don't know Denis, perhaps you'd put a word in for me?Sinead wrote:If you all talk nicely to Denis I am sure he will be able to ask Marie Molloy (nee Whelan)

Thanks to everyone for their help.
I wonder does Dublin Fire Brigade have a "history" section/department?

I know the woman to see DD but I've never spoken to her and I haven't seen her in Greystones for a couple of years. I never knew that her Dad was the Fire Chief,so I can't see me being much help to you.I'm sure there must be some Photos in Dun Laoghaire Corporation.Derrindaffderg wrote:Hi Sinéad - Being a newbie I don't know Denis, perhaps you'd put a word in for me?Sinead wrote:If you all talk nicely to Denis I am sure he will be able to ask Marie Molloy (nee Whelan)

A bit of info I found on the net.

The Municipal Building on George's Place was erected in 1899, and comprised a fire station, in which some of the firemen lived, a storehouse for the Urban Council, and stables for their horses. When Dun Laoghaire Borough was established in 1932 the building became the fire station for the new enlarged and modernised fire service. It remained so until 1992 when the new station was built on Kill Avenue.

This, I suspect, might be the original brigade in front of the Pavilion. Photo 1904 or later

In all my years playing football there I have no idea how we never broke a pane of glass in any of the windows. There used be 3 big doors there.

Gulliver,
That is a smashing photo from 1904..never saw that before..I used to pity my Grandmother and imagined they grew up in a shabby town but, just realised that in 1904 she would have been pushing her children in their pram on that lovely elegant seafront...
Navnman,
Like us you probably knew better than to break any window...we knew all the lectures..from being seen and not heard to I'll kill you if you get into trouble...and the shame of that...there was a huge amount of respect around in our childhood...Oh yes and wooden spoons

Thanks Harjoe, this is exactly the type of photo I was looking for. Would anyone have an exact date?Harjoe wrote:There is a photo of the fire station in my photos page 9 of the fire engines before going to Belfast to help during the war

Again thanks to everybody

Re: Old Fire Station - 9 Georges Place
Google the bombing of Belfast and you will have the date.

Thanks Sinéad. I never even thought of that! Sometimes the obvious thing to do doesn't occur to you at all !Sinead wrote:Google the bombing of Belfast and you will have the date.

Re: Old Fire Station - 9 Georges Place
I agree with you, it is only when you see something written down that
you can see the obvious answer/solution.

Senility must be creeping in!
The old fire station was in fact number 10 Georges Place as this photo clearly shows. Despite going through that door Mon - Fri for 12 odd years I still managed to call it number 9. Number 9 is of course up the steps just across from this door. The faded and torn label underneath the number 10 is actually the old Dún Laoghaire crest put there by yours truly many moons ago!

Re: Old Fire Station - 9 Georges Place
Where are you talking about NM? The door with number 10? It's part of the Fire Station. During my time there it housed DLRCC offices but was cut off from the rest of the building which was an Enterprise Centre which was accessed by the front door just beyond where the cars can be seen. I was upstairs where there were a number of offices which I believe we're formally sleeping/living quarters for the Firemen.Navanman wrote:I thought a family lived there??????

Number 9 which was accessed by walking up the flight of steps also housed Council offices. I believe the Council have fully vacated 9 & 10 and I think the Enterprise Centre may be closed too?
Re: Old Fire Station - 9 Georges Place
It was either that door in the photo or was there another door beside it as well.
