Thanks Rocker
By coincidence, the spot I chose to take this photo was where the gentleman is standing in this earlier photo.

Wow, now that is a super duper shot. How pristine everything was. HID will be delighted with that.

Not sure where to post this, but some incredible photos here. These were one group of brave men. Looking at some of the images made me claustrophobic. Weird really, as there's nothing bigger than space!

I've seen some before Grammer, like optical illusions.

Interesting, I don't see just shadows, I see alligators and dinasours at the feet of the camels

The black 'camels' are the shadows of camels at sunset seen from overhead. The camels are the white lines .....
Nice one Grammer

Re: Camera Skills Without Photoshop
Thanks for that lighthouse photo Zirco, hadn't heard of that place. Looked it up and it has an interesting history. Nice shot Gerald, I seem to remember that I have a similar one I took of some Christmas lights a few years ago. Unusual effect and very dizzying.

Re: Camera Skills Without Photoshop
On the question (elsewhere) on Tripods, my rules ( which I didnt always follow, regretfully) are these
Dont expect any one model to fit all your critical needs - mobility, sturdyness, price
If youre planning outside activites - never underestimate the ruinous impact of even moderate wind - go for sturdy
Make sure the tripod is equipped with a resiliand downwards hook i.e underneath the head or leg brackets that'll enable you to hang a bag or backpack. This will add to the rigour of the tripod, frustrate thieves and keep solicitors fees down.
Remember you dont always need to use a tripod To achieve steadiness. There are good alternatives - a convenient wall, an arm wrapped around a lamp post or a photographers bean bag. Depending on the camera and the requirements of the scene, ratcheting up your ISO setting or increasing shutter speed may be sufficient.

This (NYC) shop is simply the best and their site is useful for learning and wishing . . .

And this site is "educational" ("I wish I had paid attention more in school and got a better job") too

Re: Camera Skills Without Photoshop
Oops Michéal, I nearly missed this ! I originally tried to post in this section but I couldn't find it
We had a debate about the use of the hook underneath the leg brackets. I thought it was a great idea to hang
a camera rucksack on it but someone else pointed out that if it was windy then the movement of the rucksack / backpack
would result in camera shake . I'm not convinced but will see what happens when I try it .
It's so hard to choose a tri-pod and they are not cheap so I think I will take a trip into town and call in to Berminghams .
They are well respected and I definitely need the advice.
Thanks again Micheál

Re: Camera Skills Without Photoshop
Berminghams are very good. Another place I find good is Halls in Talbot Street, just up from the entrace to the Irish Life Mall.
Your friends have a point about the bag catching the wind. There really no escaping the wind. Even the lamp post trick is vulnerable.
Yesterday, I was in Sandycove and had to abandon a particular Stop Sign as it was actually vibrating in the high wind.

Re: Camera Skills Without Photoshop
I'm a long time fan of Halls. Passed them every day(when I was working) and got everything in there from travel magnifiers, small magnifying glasses, binoculars and of course cameras. Treated like an important customer even when just spending five Euro. Professionals with interest in passing on knowledge.

I forgot about Halls
I bought a lens hood in there last year and the chap that served me was very friendly and helpful.
I think I'll check in with them first. Thanks Micheál and Rocker.
