Re: Site.
Marine Road to the left. I remember Gulliver talked about this. The block on the right was demolished and rebuilt a few feet/yards back as we see today. I hope I'm correct on that? What was the reason?
Re: Site.
Marine Road was previously known as Sussex Parade. The reason for the premises being demolished is given here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%BAn_Laoghaire
Fantastic photo, by the way.

I also notice the shop is a single story building, look how narrow the footpath is.Sinead wrote:The shop on the junction of George's Street and Patrick Street, partially seen in the photo was owned by
John Sex, it was a grocery and whiskey bonders.

Holla:
One part of the building was single storey, the bit on the corner, the rest of the building
was 2 storey. Some years ago I saw a slide of this photograph at a Borough Historical
Soc. lecture. Would love to be at the lecture on Wednesday but I am going to the 'AZOO'
to see the lighting. Enjoy yourself.

Built 1896.jabra wrote:Any idea of the year the photo was taken. I notice a corner of a building where the entrance of St. Michael's church was or is.
Or what year the church was built?
By 1900, the centre of the town was congested and steps were taken to widen the street. These steps included the demolition of shop frontages on George's Street from Patrick Street to Mulgrave Street, and their replacement by new frontages stepped back about 5 yards (4.5m). Shops on the corner of Marine Road and George's Street were also demolished.
Re: Site.
Just a thought.......I notice the location on the board index in which Water and other political issues is in "Miscellaneous". I may have missed why.......Any reason for this?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Great portal photo of the tram outside St. Michael's Hospital. I wonder what McKenna shop was?. I remember the V.H.I at that spot years ago.

I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.

Nice shot for the time. I can't remember the exact date but it was in the 40's. Did McKenna's repair electrical appliances?

Were they the same McKennas that were in Deansgrange a good few years ago??Strum wrote:Rocker wrote:Great portal photo of the tram outside St. Michael's Hospital. I wonder what McKenna shop was?. I remember the V.H.I at that spot years ago.

Re: Site.
My mother told me her Granny/My Great Grandmother lived in 37A which I think is either the last house on that block or maybe it was next and already knocked down by the time this photo was taken,

Re: Site.
That new section of St. Michael's Hospital was built in the 1930's. My parents lived in 102, the house was one of those demolished to make way for the new part of the hospital.
In the late 40's and up into the 60's the shop on the right was, I think, Smyths, it was the Post Office, hence the post box outside. The section of the shop up the laneway was a tailors.
