ah.....do we have an amateur astronomer in the making here? :D
there a loads of examples which illustrate how big things really are...

The Great Orion Nebula (M42) is around 1500 light years away and is nearly 40 light years across.
The Andromeda galaxy(M31) is 2.9 million light years away!

btw....you can see both of these objects with the unaided eye...
M31 is a bit harder to see, but once you know where to look it's easy to find.
Also, it's nearly impossible to miss M42!! It's in the constellation on Orion (under the belt).

(A light year is...5,878,625,373,183 miles!

an example ;- 40 light years is the distance light travels in 40 years

light travels at 299,792,458 meters per second

31,556,926 seconds in a year.... so x40 is... 1,262,277,040 seconds in 40 years

that works out at 378,421,136,498,564,320 meters

or

235,139,992,664,107 miles

Is that 235 trillion miles?
"Kinda puts driving to Tesco on a wet Sunday afternoon into perspective doesn't it....
Quick calculation to demonstrate just how big these things are...
The average distance form the earth to the moon is around 238,000 miles
(can get as far away as 252,000 as it's orbit isn't exactly circular)....

you could travel to the moon and back 492,915,630 times and have gone less than 1 pixel's distance in your vid ted

god i must be bored. just glad i'm off tomorrow

The narators voice in that link was just amazing, so easy to listen to. the music had me puzzled for a while , but then I realised it was Ride On '' The instrumental version is the nicest I've ever heard, Thanks Ted for another interesting post , to set us all wondering

This is the link to Christy Moore singing ''Ride On'' , and the lyrics are very moving :-(
